We wanted to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for the extraordinary service of our DOC members during these challenging times.
COVID outbreaks have impacted nearly all prisons statewide. This has put tremendous pressure on staff to keep the public health crisis under control while continuing to maintain safety and security in the facilities.
Staff at DOC have risen to the challenge. Their tireless work, dedication, and commitment to their co-workers and community in the face of adversity is an inspiration and exemplifies heroic public service at its finest.
We thank them for everything they are doing to keep their co-workers and the incarcerated population healthy and safe.
A few updates for our members at DOC:
- UNION HOLIDAY MEETING & RAFFLE DRAWING: Registration is still open for our virtual Holiday Membership Meeting over Zoom on December 17 at 7 p.m. We will be raffling off dozens of cash prizes - you do not need to be present to win. To be eligible for the raffle, you must register no later than 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 14. Register for the meeting here.
- STATEWIDE GRIEVANCE & ULP: We have filed a grievance and Unfair Labor Practice charge to protest the Department's unilateral decision to impose temporary layoffs on the membership. We are processing both the ULP and grievance and will keep you posted as soon as information is available.
- EMERGENCY RESOURCE GUIDE: Our Union has compiled an extensive resource guide for members of Teamsters 117 facing economic challenges brought on by the pandemic. You can find community resources here.
- MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES: With the excessive workload and stresses of the pandemic, it's common for people to struggle with mental health issues. If you are seeking support, many excellent resources are available including Safe Call Now, Crisis Line, National Suicide Prevention Line, National Drug Helpline, and National Domestic Violence Hotline. View these resources here.
This year has been an incredibly challenging year for so many of us. We wish you and your loved ones fortitude, happiness, and resilience this holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.
Thank you again for your service. Please stay healthy and safe.
