No agreement reached with State in DOC negotiations

Our DOC negotiations team worked late into the night on Friday and early into Saturday morning after a long week in mediation in an effort to reach an agreement with the State over our 2019-2021 collective bargaining agreement.

Unfortunately, the State was unwilling to put forth an economic proposal that adequately recognizes the critical public safety work you perform. Our negotiations team is unanimously recommending that you vote to reject the State's proposal. We will be providing a more complete update from negotiations and information about the upcoming contract vote process early next week.

The state’s argument last contract was that they could not afford a raise due to their court ordered obligation to fully fund education in Washington state. This was introduced in arbitration and the arbitrator used that in part in his decision on how much of a raise to give us. Now that the state realizes the “we cant afford it” line works in arbitration, they will use it again, this time on some other project/need/court ordered obligation. I’m sure they conveniently left out the reason as to why they can’t afford it, it will probably only be addressed once arbitration is in progress. If the union prepares appropriately for this situation, we will get a good deal. We should all vote against the state’s proposal and send it to arbitration. They will also be gauging the response of union members in the voting, show them we are strong together and everyone vote.
