(Tukwila, WA) – An arbitrator has issued a stinging rebuke to the Department of Corrections (DOC) in a ruling that favors four correctional employees at the Monroe Correctional Complex (MCC), who were disciplined by the DOC after Byron Scherf’s murder of Officer Jayme Biendl in the prison chapel on January 29, 2011.

Two Local 117 Police Officers, Roger Gale of the City of Pacific and Willie Bergin from the University of Washington, attended National Police Week in Washington D.C. from May 12-18. The two Shop Stewards were accompanied at the event by Michelle Woodrow, Local 117’s Director of Corrections & Law Enforcement.
Governor Inslee announced on Thursday, June 27 that the State Legislature had arrived at a deal on the operating budget for the next biennium. The agreement includes increased funding to the DOC by $3.5 million.
On Thursday, June 20, the Department of Corrections announced its contingency plan should the legislature fail to pass an operating budget before July 1, 2013.
The plan, if implemented, will have a major impact on Teamsters at the DOC. We understand that the Department will implement a reduced staffing model, which will result in a significant number of temporary layoffs. Layoff notices could come via email as early as Monday, June 24 in order to be in compliance with the 5-day notification requirements of your collective bargaining agreement.
