A skilled Safeway crew was crowned Local 117 soccer kings this weekend at the 3rd annual Teamsters Local 117 soccer tournament. The event was held at the Tukwila Community Center on Saturday, September 22, with eight teams participating representing six different industries.
Taxi drivers and port truckers joined Teamsters from the grocery, parking, steel, and maritime industries. In all, over 100 members and their families were on hand to enjoy the day's festivities.
Director of Organizing, Leonard Smith, manned the grill for three straight hours, serving up hot dogs and hamburgers to players and spectators.
The event culminated in an all-grocery championship game with the Safeway team taking on Fred Meyer FC. At the end of regulation, the game was tied 3-3, and was ultimately decided during a 10-minute overtime period, with Safeway netting the winning goal.
Thanks to members of Local 117's Comite Latino, especially Juan David Martinez of Washington Chain and Alfredo Espino of Simon Metals, for their help in organizing the event.
Watch for the flyer in your shop next summer if you are interested in fielding a team in 2013.
