Legislation for Working Families
Updated On: May 03, 2013

Teamsters Local 117 employs a full-time Lobbyist whose job is to represent members' interest in Olympia.  Your Union's Political Action Coordinator organizes statewide Political Action Committees (PACs) and mobilizes members to turn out for hearings and lobbying efforts in support of legislation that benefits working families.

REPORT FROM OLYMPIA - 2013

For an update on progress toward your Union's legislative priorities for the 2013 legislative session, see Local 117's Report from Olympia below:

STATE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES - 2013

1.  INTEREST ARBITRATION FOR CORRECTIONAL EMPLOYEES (HB1490)

BREAKING NEWS!  TEAMSTERS AT THE DOC WIN INTEREST ARBITRATION!

State correctional employees perform one of the most stressful, dangerous jobs in the United States. The State of Washington, however, has failed to acknowledge the uniquely dangerous nature of corrections’ work, and has failed to adequately address staff safety issues.

The Washington State Legislature must take action to pass interest arbitration legislation for correctional employees – HB1490. Interest arbitration would allow a neutral arbitrator, mutually selected, to settle contract disputes that cannot be resolved in negotiations.

County correctional employees, the Washington State Patrol, local police officers, firefighters and other law enforcement and public safety professionals have broad interest arbitration rights. It is time that our State’s correctional employees are afforded these rights as well.

Call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and tell your representatives to support interest arbitration for State correctional employees!  For more information about your Union's fight to win interest arbitration rights for correctional employees, visit www.DOCProtectsWA.org.

2.  FAIRNESS FOR TAXIS

Local 117 is working with the Western Washington Taxicab Operators Association (WWTCOA) to pass two bills: one that seeks to protect taxi operators through greater enforcement of city regulations, and a second that would adjust the Labor and Industries rates currently paid by taxis. Taxicab operators are currently misclassified by L&I  and must overpay at the same rate as armored car vehicle drivers and security guards.

3. PROTECTING WORKERS INJURED ON THE JOB

The State Senate is launching an all-out attack on our workers’ compensation system that protects workers when they are injured on the job. Senate Republicans have voted to introduce 5 bills that would cut benefits for injured workers and their families.

Call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 and urge your State Senators to oppose Senate Bills 5112, 5124, 5126, 5127 and 5128.

4. PROTECTING WORKERS' RETIREMENT SECURITY

Some legislators down in Olympia are pushing forward a bill that would put public sector employees’ retirement security at risk. Senate Bill 5851 aims at supplanting public employees’ defined benefit plan, or pension, with a defined contribution plan, or 401k.

When the market crashed in 2008, it decimated millions of workers’ 401ks across the country. SB5851 would ultimately expose public employees in the State of Washington to the same kind of risk. Local 117 has been on the ground in Olympia fighting the bill. Lobbyist Teresita Torres, together with our labor partners, signed on in opposition to the bill when it was heard by the Senate Ways & Means Committee on March 1. Your Union also sent out an action alert urging members to tell their legislators to oppose the bill. TAKE ACTION! Protect your retirement.

Call the Legislative Hotline in Olympia at 1-800-562-6000 and tell your representatives that SB5851 is bad public policy and would harm workers’ retirement security.
