On January 8, Teamsters Local 117, the Union that represents warehouse workers and drivers employed by United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI), met with representatives of the company in federal mediation in an effort to resolve the four-week strike at the UNFI distribution center in Auburn, WA.
Throughout the day, the Union presented several options for a complete resolution of all issues.
UNFI was unwilling to give the Union bargaining committee a conclusive response regarding the outstanding issues.
The company did, however, commit to present a concrete proposal on Wednesday for the Union to consider. The Company has now indicated that it will present a proposal on Thursday.
Nearly 160 workers have spent over four grueling weeks on the picket line. All of the workers have lost their health insurance. Many are unable to pay the rent and do not have money to put food on the table. Every day that UNFI drags out the process, the lives of 160 workers and their families hang in the balance.
We urge the company to honor the commitment that it made during yesterday’s negotiations and present a proposal immediately so that bargaining process can continue.
In the meantime, you can support workers on strike at UNFI by donating to the Teamsters Local 117 UNFI Workers’ Hardship Fund. All of the proceeds from the fund will go directly to workers with the greatest financial need.
Thank you for your support!
