Forty-one SCS Refrigerated Services employees, represented by Teamsters Local 117, went on strike on Monday afternoon in response to the Company’s surveillance and intimidation of its employees and its refusal to bargain a contract in good faith.
“The last thing we wanted is a strike, but SCS has left us no alternative,” said Tracey A. Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 117. “The Company has refused to bargain a contract for seven months and engaged in unlawful surveillance of its employees.”
Negotiations between Local 117 and SCS began in February. The Union says the company consistently refused to bargain by cancelling numerous bargaining sessions, coming unprepared or without authority to bargain and by presenting the Union with a single take-it-or-leave-it offer.
Union members at SCS have been working without a contract since March 31.
Picket lines went up today at SCS facilities in Algona and Fife. SCS Refrigerated Services is the largest provider of public refrigerated warehouse services in the Greater Puget Sound region. Teamsters Local 117 represents approximately 16,000 working men and women across Washington State.
