Dwayne Collins Writes a Tribute to his Retiring Co-Worker, Joe Wormley
Updated On: Jun 17, 2009
39-year Teamster retiree, Joe Wormley

He is a man who never sought much recognition or praise.  After thirty-nine years as a member of Teamsters Local 117, Joe Wormley wants to retire in the same way he spent his career at SCS Refrigerated Services – without all of the hoopla.

Joe got a job at SCS in August of 1970 right out of high school, after working at Boeing for four years.  What was supposed to be a temporary summer job, turned into a milestone.  “I got caught in the big Boeing layoff of 1970.  I didn’t plan on staying this long at SCS, but, as they say, the rest is history,” said Joe.

May 29, 2009 was the last working day for Joe, who has been punching a clock since he was 18.  His only break in employment was the Boeing layoff from January to August of 1970.   Because of his dedication and perfect attendance, Joe spent much of his time at SCS in the military chill area – an account that stayed at the company for over thirty-five years, thanks largely to Joe’s leadership.

In retirement, there will be no sitting around watching the grass grow for Joe Wormley.  Joe will be looking forward to spending more time with family members, all of whom live in the Seattle area.  He also plans to visit Bakersfield, CA to watch drag racing.  Joe is most anxious to devote more time to his hobby – restoring classic cars.  He hopes to add to his collection of four cars – a 71 Camaro, 66 Chevy Chevelle, 56 Chevy, and 37 Chevy Coup.

“I was a bit hesitant at first, but everyone I talked with said that retiring was the best thing they’ve ever done.  I will be able to do whatever I want, whenever I want,” Joe said.

From the men and women of SCS Refrigerated Services and Local 117, we thank Joe for an outstanding Teamster career and wish him good luck and a happy retirement.
